SAP Business One / SAP S/4HANA
SAP is designed for global multinationals that need a standardised platform across 20+ countries with thousands of users. SAP Business One targets the smaller end, but still costs ₹40–80L to implement and ₹10–20L per year in licensing for 50 users. SAP S/4HANA is in the ₹1Cr+ range for implementation alone.
Who SAP is right for: Listed companies or MNC subsidiaries with global operations, standardised processes, and a dedicated IT team. A ₹200Cr Indian manufacturer is not the right SAP customer — a ₹5,000Cr MNC subsidiary is.
Odoo
Odoo is an open-source ERP with enterprise licensing. It is modular, relatively affordable to start, and covers most standard business functions. The challenge: Odoo customisation gets expensive quickly. Standard modules work well; once you need Indian-specific workflows (Tally-style accounting, complex GST scenarios, HRMS with PF/ESI), the customisation effort and cost approaches custom development anyway — but you still pay per-user licensing on top.
Odoo is typically best for businesses with mostly standard, Western-style workflows that don't need heavy customisation.
Tally ERP / Tally Prime
Tally is an accounting software, not an ERP. Despite the name, it lacks real manufacturing, CRM, HRMS, and project management capabilities. Most Indian businesses use Tally for accounts and then build Excel/WhatsApp workarounds for everything else. Custom ERP
Custom ERP is built exactly for your workflow — your GST structure, your approval chains, your industry-specific modules, your user roles. You own it outright. No per-user licensing. No annual renewal. The downside: higher upfront cost and longer initial implementation than buying a SaaS ERP.

When should you choose custom ERP?
Choose custom ERP when: (1) your workflow is non-standard or industry-specific, (2) you're growing fast and per-user SaaS costs will scale against you, (3) you need deep integration with Indian compliance systems (GST, TDS, EPF, e-invoice), or (4) you want full ownership and no vendor dependency.
Industries where custom ERP almost always wins in India
- Manufacturing: BOM, job costing, quality control workflows are always company-specific. Standard Odoo manufacturing works for simple discrete manufacturing; anything beyond it needs customisation that costs as much as custom development.
- Education (schools, colleges): No standard ERP handles Indian school fee structures, affiliation board requirements, NAAC reporting, or the combination of admission + academic + hostel + transport + parent app that Indian institutions need.
- Healthcare: Hospital management requires domain-specific workflows — OPD queuing, TPA billing, drug batch tracking, NABH documentation — that general ERP platforms handle poorly.
- Logistics / transport: LR generation, trip-based driver settlement, e-way bill, and multi-branch freight billing are almost never well-handled by standard ERP products.
- Trading / FMCG distribution: Van sales, beat plans, scheme management, FEFO inventory, and high-volume credit customer management are Indian market requirements that generic ERP handles poorly.
When should you choose Odoo or SAP?
Choose Odoo if: Your business has mostly standard workflows with minimal customisation, you want a proven platform with a large community, and you're comfortable with per-user licensing that will grow with headcount.
Choose SAP if: You're a listed company or MNC subsidiary with standardisation requirements across geographies, you have a dedicated IT team, and budget is not the primary constraint.
Stick with Tally if: You only need accounting and are happy managing operations in Excel. Tally is excellent at what it does — its scope is just much narrower than a real ERP.
